Charles is a partner of De Jager Volkenant and the firm’s senior litigation counsel with 33 years of experience. He carries on a general litigation counsel practice focused in the areas of charities and non-profit organizations, employment, labour and human rights, education law, civil litigation and mediation and arbitration.

Charles acts for a wide range of charities and non-profit organizations including local and international church and para-church organizations, local and international missions, aid and development organizations, independent schools and education organizations, housing organizations and foundations as well as a variety of businesses and individuals.

→  Assistance with member, shareholder and director issues, CRA audits, volunteers, independent contractors, employment matters including disabled employees, discipline and termination, labour matters including union organization, grievances and arbitrations, human rights issues, student and parent matters, privacy, business and real estate disputes, residential tenancy issues, wills and estates disputes and personal representation matters

→  Mediation, arbitration and other alternative dispute resolution procedures

→  Assistance with organizational governance, operational due diligence, risk management, reorganization and windup

→  Assistance regarding compliance with legal and regulatory requirements including the Income Tax Act and CRA policy, Societies Act, Employment Standards Act, Labour Relations Code, Workers Compensation Act, Human Rights Code, Personal Information Protection Act, Independent School Act and Teacher Act

→  Assistance with the development and implementation of policies and important legal documents including volunteer, employment and independent contractor agreements, Human Resource manuals, Codes of Conduct, misconduct policies, harassment, bullying and workplace safety policies, education contracts, student discipline and parental misconduct policies, privacy policies, investigation procedures and dispute resolution policies

Charles has represented clients before the Federal and Tax Courts of Canada and all levels of Court in British Columbia as well as administrative bodies including the Human Rights Tribunal, Employment Standards Tribunal, Residential Tenancy Branch and Teachers Regulation Branch.

Charles has presented numerous lectures and workshops on a wide variety of topics in his areas of expertise.

Apart from his legal practice and volunteer activities, Charles enjoys gardening and photography and is an avid fly fisherman and sportsman. Charles and his wife Joyce live in Surrey, British Columbia.
